About Funadama Shrine

A very old shrine in Hakodate, Funadama Shrine enshrines Watatsumi, Shitsuchioji, and Susanoo no Mikoto, all gods associated with water, the sea, and navigation.

The shrine is situated up on the slopes leading up to Mt Hakodate, giving a great view of the harbor below.

My Visit

By the time we got to the shrine, we had marched all over town. We saw the red brick warehouses, the Old Public Hall, the Hakodate Orthodox Church, and more. The area the shrine is in is full of great historical places to visit.

However it was July and even up north in Hokkaido it was hot. This was on my list of places to visit, but seeing the line of stairs up the the shrine almost made me give up.

Hydrangea season ends in June where I live in Gifu, but I was happy to see them again this trip. Hokkaido is far enough north that late July is hydrangea season!

Soon after dropping by the shrine, we relaxed at a cafe to cool down and recover before going to the ropeway to see the view from the top of the mountain.
