About Bansho-ji

Bansho-ji is a very modern and flashy looking Buddhist temple that really fits in nicely with the surrounding arcades and electronics stores, but it’s roots are very old. It was built by the Oda family in 1540 and the funeral for the father of Oda Nobunaga, Oda Nobuhide, was held here. It now houses the mortuary tablets for the Oda family.

It’s popular with goshuin fans because they have a lot of beautiful designs that change every month.

My Visit/This Goshuin

News about the shogi player pictured on this goshuin, Sota Fujii, was all over the news for months. At the age of 13, he was the youngest ever to reach 3dan. Won first in the 2017 3-dan league, earning his 4dan after only one season. He got his first 50 wins faster than any professional in the history of the shogi league. I could go on, but it’s just more of the same. He was hailed as a shogi boy genius.

By 2022 he was defending titles.

He defended his Kisei title in a series of matches against Takuya Nagase, who he had previously defeated to earn the right to challenge the previous Kisei holder, 3-1. This match was held at Bansho-ji.

As well as being a major historical temple despite it’s very modern design, it also hosts major shogi matches.
