About Ishikiri Tsuruga Shrine

Ishikiri Tsuruga Shrine has a long history dating back to 659BC (over 2,000 years ago) during the reign of the first emperor of Japan, Emperor Jimmu. Both Umashimade-no-mikoto and Nigihayahi-no-mikoto in Miyayama are worshipped here. The power of the gods were said to be able to cut stone, thus the name “Ishikiri.” The deities are also believed to be able to help cure tumors. Locals often call the shrine “Ishikiri-san”

It also houses the sword known as Ishikiri-maru and is a popular stop for fans of Touken Ranbu.

My Visit

My husband and I were in Osaka for the new year to see his parents. We always do a little bit of sightseeing when we stop by and this time we finally got to visit Ishikiri Tsuruga Shrine. I had a range of reasons for wanting to go. One of which is simple: it houses a famous sword that is also one of my favorite characters in the game, Touken Ranbu.

It’s also a pretty famous shrine for the reasons I wrote in the section above.

We were able to park with surprising ease and made our way under the clear blue sky to the shrine grounds to find a massive line of people.

Surprisingly, the line for goods featuring the sword, Ishikiri, was extremely short. Most people wanted to do their hatsumode and get out. Getting my goshuin and my merch was a breeze.

Dude and I also got our omikuji there. They had an absolutely cute horse one that I couldn’t resist. We tied our omikuji and made our way out.

You can see some other goshuin from Osaka here.
